A one room forrest mountain side stone hermitage accessible only on foot with a wood fireplace, bed, kitchen table, prayer books & Bible, cupboards, kneeler, within a quarter mile of a stream, large iron pot, spit, plate, cup, & bowl, knife, fork & spoon, grill, axe, knives, grind stone, rabbit wire, hoe, spade, some vegetable seeds, and at least 50 miles from another human being. Hammer, anvil, saw, bellows, adze, optional. Matches and paper & a desk might be nice, but...meh. The Desert Fathers had it right you know.
Today isn't the first day I've thought about living in a hermitage. I need to live apart from the world, but that's not practical. Maybe, I can do it at home...if I stop watching the news and using social media etc.... But, is that realistic and/or achievable?

Crtl Alt Del
I recently (sometime this month) became aware of a new political movement. I was unaware of the Alt-right or what it was. After educating myself some on the movement, I am worried about the escalation of aggression. With movements like the Alt-right and groups like the Sons of Odin, we are on a collision course with race riots and worse. I've been worrying about a lot of this crap of late. I think I need to take Luke 12:22-31 to heart.

Factory Worker
During Fr. Daniel's sermon today on the Gospel reading, he said that we place limitations on ourselves sometimes by what we call ourselves. What is my limitation? Factory worker.

Reflecting lately, with all the violence of late & anti Western sentiment, I've been worried that I'm developing xenophobic tendencies (I believe that everybody should be treated equally and it's very important to me). Then yesterday, a la rang, I had a good chat with one of my range buddies, Young. But I missed my old East Indian friend.

Why are these things okay now?
So many things that have been sinful for thousands of years are now okay, homosexuality (I've changed my view on this), murder (abortion, assisted suicide), suicide, divorce, etc.... This passage gives me a lot of grief sometimes.

Being asked to remain in a Church with radically changing doctrine that goes against your conscince is akin to being asked to have anal sex. Insisting that there's room for everybody, even if they disagree, while forcing one opinion from the pulpit and shutting down debate is saying, "Shhh, just let it go in."

I've read that the smarter one is, the more one contemplates one's own mortality. I also saw a study that showed that the less people had the ability to reason, the less likely they were to believe in God. They're both flattering, but not very consoling.

NDD @ Night
The NDD hit me pretty hard tonight. The time around sleep is usually a time my mind races and wanders and I find it troubling, stressful, depressing, and even a little scary. Thoughts of mortality, unfulfilled goals and dreams, physical failings and aging/lost youth, and lack of purpose in life mix with thoughts of over due projects, debt, daily presentations at work, money for retirement, and pending house and car repair. Sunday nights are especially bad. I can't sleep either, which makes nothing better.
P.S. My single greatest regret in life still is that I never served.

I also find it odd that people (who have never seen one) believe in the existence of extra terrestrial but will refuse to even entertain the remote possibility of intelligent design, failing to see/admit that both take faith. |

It's disappointing that the sermon on this Gospel reading often degenerates into eco-justice rather than talking about spiritual water. Still, the idea if being fountains of water that comes from this Gospel narrative is intriguing.

2 South
A friend of mine was recently admitted to the hospital and I went to visit him in the mental health section. I reflected on the way we view mental health as a society. We pay lip service to ending the stigma associated with mental disorders; but, for as long as I've lived in Stratford 2 South has been a term used mostly to insult someone. There's even corporate sponsorship (Bell) for depression. But, if you've been to 2 South you can't own firearms. You can't be a policeman or hold certain government jobs. I understand that people need to be safe first. However, simply seeing a psychiatrist puts you at risk of fortifying certain career paths and people don't even know it. A perfectly normal person needing a little help is permanently branded. My advice, don't see one unless you've hit rock fv3/<!ng bottom. You'll Do more harm than good. It will be used against you; it's like a ticking time bomb. Going through a divorce? One parent will use it to get the kids. Want to join the Army? Not so fast soldier. You're not stable enough. Wanna buy a gun? I don't think so Trigger. Wanna fly a 747 for a living. I don't think so Tim. Do you see where I've sailed by boat? So, we only pay lip service to ending the stigma, or to helping people for that matter. After all, they're crazies anyway. P.S. Pray for my friend. I'm not sure what has happened to him, but he is suffering from memory recall problems and is depressed. |

Mind Twister
If time travel is possible, and I believe it is, do the changes only happen once the present (if there's such a thing) arrives at the traveler's departure point, or have all the changes that will ever happen already happened?
Who Meets Us
I've often thought that my grandparents would meet me when I entered the next world (my parents are still living). What if it's out children? If Heaven and Hell are eternal, what if our children greet us when we enter the next world? It might actually be more comforting. Not that they have predeceased us, but that once you're there, you always have been and are always there (like the cosmic ribbon from Star Trek Generations sort of).

Caliphate or Yet Another Strange Vivid Dream
So, I was dreaming again last night. I was at St. Paul's in Stratford. We were letting Muslims use the basement for worship. They set up this bright pastel coloured tent. Then there were more tents. Soon there were more Muslims than Christians at the Church. They were setting up a caliphate. I was talking to an Imam at a long table in the basement. I said that we both worshiped the same God, only differently. He said that we did not. I replied that we both worshiped the God of Ishmael. He feinted confusion. I began to explain. He cut me off as I started to tell me that he was very offended by my statement.

Lent 2017
So, I have given up fast food for lent. I hope my Lent goes better that the start. I haven't eaten any fast food, but I have fallen off the wagen in other ways. The struggle is demoralizing, at least the part of falling. Fasting is good for spiritual growth. Falling separates us from Him by guilt and out own disappointment. |
